How to influence your memory positively

My name is Benoit and I was born and raised in Paris, France. I'm currently working at an international organization and constantly have meetings with clients. Generally I have a good memory, especially if I can take notes for myself. But I must admit, I've had periods in which my schedule was extremely hectic.

Far too often, these were also times when I was given very important information in an informal setting-the kind of situation where I don't necessary have the ability to jot down notes. Despite the informal setting, that information is something I needed to retain, and for years I struggled. Over time, though, I've picked up some useful tricks that have drastically increased my ability to remember important information even at times when I have a busy schedule:

  • The most important thing is to stay relaxed. Stress releases hormones that make it harder for your brain to store information and work efficiently. Reducing stress enhances your memory which in turn makes your job easier.
  • Remember the limitations of your short-term memory. Generally our short-term memory can store up to seven different things at one time before it has to make room for more information.
  • In order to move information from your short-term to your long-term memory, come up with mnemonic devices. This is about setting an anchor that gives you access to the information once it has passed out of your short-term memory. For example, if a client needs 247 parts, you could remember that if you want to work 24/7 (24 hours per day, 7 days a week) with the client, you have to deliver the right number of parts. Whether you use words, numbers, or images as your mnemonic device, this brain workout will significantly increase your ability to remember what you need to know in order to do a great job at work.
